Connecticut Repossession Laws and Requirements

Recovery: Peaceful repossession is permitted in Connecticut. The police department must be notified immediately after the vehicle is taken.

Redemption: The debtor can redeem within 15 days after the taking by paying the entire balance due, provided there has been no notification of intent to take. If notification was given, no redemption right applies.

Deficiency: If 60% or more of the purchase price has been paid, a public repo sale with notice is required. If less than 60% has been paid, a private repo sale is permitted.

Recording: All lien instruments relating to repossessed motor vehicles must be recorded within 20 days with the Connecticut Motor Vehicle Department. UCC adopted October 1961.

Title Information: Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles, 60 State St., Wethersfield, Connecticut 06109.

Documents Required to Transfer Ownership: Certificate of title, affidavit of repossession, and a notarized Bill of Sale or Connecticut Q-1 form.

Plates: Must be returned to the State of Connecticut if not transferred to another vehicle by the owner or repossessor.
