Alabama Repossession Regulations
Title Information:

Alabama State Requirements:
- Alabama permits peaceful repossession without court orders when conducted lawfully
- Uniform Certificate of Title has been standard since 1975 model year vehicles
- License plates remain with the vehicle after recovery
- Creditors must provide debtors with at least 10 days’ notice before any sale
- Sale notices must include the total amount owed, including all recovery costs
- Deficiency balances may be pursued after proper sale procedures
- Repeated acceptance of late payments may constitute a contract waiver
Post-Recovery Documentation:
Transfer of ownership. Requires the Certificate of Title, Affidavit of Repossession, and Bill of Sale. Must show gross proceeds and odometer reading. All liens shown on the title must be released.
